After completing his A-levels, Carl Martin Welcker trained as a machinist and then studied industrial engineering. After successfully completing his studies, he worked for the machine tool manufacturer Klingelnberg Söhne and an American knife and saw manufacturer. In 1992, he joined the family-owned company Alfred H. Schütte KG, Cologne, which he has headed as managing partner since 1993. Since 2001, Welcker has been involved in the main board of the VDMA, leading its fortunes as vice president and treasurer since 2011 and as president from 2016 to 2020. He is also involved in various honorary posts, including chairman of the VDW (German Machine Tool Builders' Association) from 2004 to 2009.
