Recovery of the world market for machine tools

In 2021, the global production of machine tools increased by 20 per cent. China and the USA reported production records. The global machine tool production amounted to almost EUR 71 bn, about one fifth above previous the year’s volume.

China remained the largest producer with a production volume of almost EUR 22 bn and a world market share of 31 per cent, serving to widen even more the gap ahead of its competitors. Germany and Japan hold a similar market share of approximately 13 per cent each. The German output was EUR 9 bn, which is only slightly above the COVID-induced low of the last year. Japan’s production volume amounted to EUR 8,9 bn.

The USA are the world’s fourth largest machine tool producer and, from the American viewpoint, 2021 was the best year ever. Achieving EUR 6,4 bn production volume, an impressive gain of almost 40%, their market share increased to 9 per cent. After the challenging prior year, Italy enjoyed healthy growth, going straight to the fifth place.
